ESTELA

Description

c. 1980

Stamped and glazed earthenware, enhanced with kiln-fired gold in suspension, the elements joined by NiCral wire.

Compare with the “Atome” brooch (p. 63), the “Perles” hand mirror (p. 71), and the “Violetta” brooch (p. 78), all reproduced in Mithé Espelt: Le Luxe discret du quotidien, Antoine Candau, 2020.

This large wall mirror belongs to the family of cosmic designs developed by Mithé Espelt in the 1980s. A variation on the “Planète” model, it also shares formal affinities with the artist’s early jewellery, particularly the “Atome” brooch.

The example presented here is distinguished by a particularly subtle palette of whites and golds. Handmade by the artist herself, it remains, to date, the only known example in these particular shades.
